Noelle York-Simmons, our brilliant and tender, wise-hearted, quick-witted, fleet-footed old-soul is moving on!
Noelle has accepted the call to be the 28th rector of Christ Church, Alexandria, Virginia. Gorgeous church. Rich and deep in history, ministry, and hope. Like us!
Around this block we know about complex emotions. Yes, we do! So when we feel grief and joy and pride and the wisdom of humility, we recognize the Holy Spirit!! Below is some of the program staff within seconds of hearing the news by text from Noelle in Virginia! We are so happy for her and Kevin and the children! But lots of memories for many people and some sadness!
A thousand goodbyes to be said and a gazillion hellos, and by the grace of God new connections will be lit up in this season of comings and goings, beginnings and endings. We people around this block called All Saints know that we are all bound together into eternity, no matter our address.
Let the people say amen.
Noelle is a beautiful person and priest. And here is a George Herbert prayer poem I have memorized because I often need its gentle teaching. The words remind us to be grateful—even in the midst of farewells—for Noelle’s vibrant presence which will always be here among the saints.
Thou hast given so much to us, O Lord,
give one thing more, a grateful heart.
Not thankful when it pleaseth us
As if thy blessings had spare days,
But such a heart whose pulse shall be thy praise.
